Guilty Pleasure – Orchids by Pepper Phillips

Once a month I attend a writer’s meeting. Of course, I have to drive thirty miles to the ‘big’ town. While there I do errands and one of those is to visit Kroger’s Supermarket. They carry items there that I could only wish for in my local stores.

One item they do carry is flowers. Now, I love flowers, but they die so quickly, so I purchase an orchid if one appeals to me. I know I’ll have blooms for the next month or more.

I have one that is still blooming, but it began to lose its flowers and it was time for a new one. When I saw this beauty I was in awe! It’s called a Blue Orchid.

Yes, it looks black in the front. The whole front was black, but then the blue began to pop out.

But it’s the back that is outstanding. Here is what it looks like.

What a surprise!

Here’s another photo showing both sides at once.

Still beautiful.

Here is the one that came before this one.

Orchids

The cost? Usually they are around fifteen dollars. The Blue Orchid was twenty-seven. But I couldn’t resist. I had to have it.

When they stop blooming, I put them in a sunny room and hope that they will bloom again next year. I have a friend and she gets her to bloom every year. I’ve never been successful, but I’m following all the advice that I’ve found on the web and purchased some Orchid Food, so I’m optimistic.

When I had a baby shower in my house in June, the above orchids were in the ‘company’ bathroom. I really think that they class it up.

So, it’s a guilty pleasure, but better than the dark chocolate I love to eat. When I see them, it perks me up for the day. And aren’t we supposed to be happy?

Do any of you grow orchids? Do you get them to rebloom? And if so, what’s your advice?

White Chocolate Bread Pudding = Yummy

Bread Pudding

This is one of the recipes in Bake LOVE Write: 105 Authors Share Dessert Recipes and Advice on Love and Writing.  Available on all major ebook distributors and in paperback form at Amazon.

This is my recipe. I can only say that it’s super delicious and has ruined me for any other bread pudding.

White Chocolate Bread Pudding by Pepper Phillips

This recipe serves 6 – 12.

16 ounce loaf King’s Hawaiian Bread

3 whole eggs

7 egg yokes

4 cups heavy whipping cream

1 cup milk

½ cup sugar

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

24 ounces white chocolate (I used Hershey’s Premium White Chips.)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Cut bread into 1” squares and place in very large bowl.

Whisk eggs and egg yolks until blended in another bowl.

Pour 3 cups cream, milk, sugar, salt and vanilla extract into saucepan and heat, but don’t bring to a boil.  When milk/cream mixture is hot, add 12 ounces of white chocolate and stir until chocolate is melted.  Remove from stove.  Slowly pour into the eggs, stirring constantly.  Slow is the key.  Then pour over the bread and mix until the bread soaks up the mixture.

Spray a 9” x 13” baking pan with cooking spray.  Pour bread into the baking dish.  Cover with foil.  Bake 30 minutes.  Remove foil and bake an addition 10 minutes.

White Chocolate Sauce:

Mix one cup of whipping cream and 12 ounces of white chocolate in sauce pan over medium heat.  Stir until chips melt. Pour over individual servings of bread pudding.

This tastes best when warm.

Enjoy…

Flag Day in Small Town America by Pepper Phillips

June 14th

I had to drive to town today and the Lion’s Club placed the American Flag in telephone brackets lining the downtown streets in our small town. I took this picture in front of the District Attorney’s Office. It was remodeled several years ago and is a lovely addition to our downtown.

Seeing the flags fluttering in the breeze always makes me proud to be an American.

This special day was set aside in 1777 when the Continental Congress adopted a flag for our country.

But why do we only fly it on special occasions?  Shouldn’t we fly it every day?

The bracket on my front porch broke. But I’m buying a new one, it will be difficult to install, as I’m not allowed on ladders, but I’ll get one of the boys to install it for me, then I’m going to fly the American flag daily.

I’m proud to be an American.

Are you?
